It has been three weeks since Hurricane Sandy tore her destructive path through the Eastern sea board, and we are still trembling over the losses some have suffered of their homes and lives in New York and New Jersey. While our hearts break for those still struggling to regain a sense of normalcy, an overwhelming sense of helplessness overtakes me and reminds me how blessed I am to live in such a beautiful place.
The bright spot of the storm was my little ray of sunshine, my baby cousin Hannah Leigh. Although the storm knocked out the power in her apartment on the LES, her mama would not let her birthday be spoiled by a pesky little tropical storm. So my family back East flew home to LA for the weekend, where we celebrated Miss Hannah’s 2nd birthday in style. We had a jam session with good friends and family, and topped the day off with some mint chocolate chip ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins at Roxbury Park – the same thing I, along with her mom and aunt, all had our birthday parties growing up.
