“Make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin to boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt. So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservation, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. If you want to get more out of life, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty.” ― Jon Krakauer Into the Wild
I believe everything in this quote with every ounce of my being. I can confidently say that most of my time is spent adhering to conformist ideals; leading a secure, sedentary lifestyle with a certain and foreseeable future (although it may not be ideal). But the rest of my time is spent pondering that little voice in my head that tends to get louder the more unhappy or unstimulated I become. This is the adventurous spirit inside of us. Encouraging us to do the unthinkable, speak the unspeakable, take the risk, make the jump.
Don’t block this voice out.
The voice in my head wants to live the life of a starving artist, traveling, writing, and taking pictures. This is the voice of creativity, oozing out of my brain. This is the voice of excitement, wonder, curiosity. This is the voice of a happy, motivated person trying to build their own destiny, whatever uncertain form it takes.
Next time you hear that little voice telling you to do something crazy? Do it. What do you have to lose? If you decide it didn’t add anything to your life, then on to the next one. But if it makes you feel content, inspired, alive… then maybe you will learn to give in a little more and succumb to the wild inside of you. Because you know what? The most rewarding experiences we have are the ones where we go beyond the boundaries of our comfort zone and try something NEW. And why deprive yourself of that? For a paycheck that goes towards bills and shit you don’t need? For an obligation that no longer fulfills you? Because you are scared of uncertainty?
The only thing to be afraid of is getting caught in the hamster wheel and waking up when your 50 realizing you didn’t follow your dreams when you had so much time to explore that road. Don’t waste any more time! Seek new people, places, cultures, adventures, and the least that can happen is that you come away knowing yourself better.
Have a great weekend wild thangs!
